Local Awards for the Paediatric Analgesia Wheel:  County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust; Using Evidenced Based Care to Improve Patient Outcome and the  Chairman's Quality Awards 2008.  Lord Darzi's commendation of the Paediatric Analgesia Wheel:  The 2008 Paediatric Analgesia Wheel was selected as one of 10 examples of where change has taken place at a local level to  deliver high quality healthcare for patients:  “Despite existing guidance, prescribing to children is often performed poorly, with potential for adverse drug events and  reactions because of the need for complex calculations and accurate measurement of small volumes. Analgesics are among  the most commonly used drugs and, because of these complexity issues, provision of pain relief is not as effective as it  should be. The Paediatric Analgesia Wheel is a pocket-sized device that does away with the maze of guidelines and  provides clinicians with a single, safe, effective way to prescribe pain relief."  High Quality Care for All, Our Journey so far, 2009  The RADAR Approach, Leading the Way in Acute Pain Education (www.painradar.co.uk):  "Healthcare workers often have concerns regarding prescribing analgesics for children, especially morphine, and may be unclear  regarding dose calculations. Prescribing tools, such as dosage charts, the British National Formulary for Children and the Paediatric  Analgesia Wheel should be available to facilitate accurate and quick age/weight-specific dosing."  Current Medical Research and Opinion 2009;25(10):2557-2569.  © Clinical Marketing Designs, all rights reserved.
